Pedro F. Castillo, 93, passed away December 3, 2018. Born on November 14, 1925 to the late Pedro F. and Estela Castillo in Arequipa, Peru, he was raised by his loving aunt, “Mama Aurelia’ and her husband Pedro P. Diaz. Pedro journeyed to the United States in 1948 to study mechanical engineering at Purdue University. He met Patricia Harmon, and the pair married in 1953. He became a proud American citizen on October 31, 1967. Pedro worked at Lehnen’s Furniture for over 54 years. He enjoyed photography and amateur radio, his call was WB9RVN. He cultivated a long record of community service with various organizations, including The American Red Cross where he served as the First Aid Chairman and member of the Disaster Action Team. Active in Boy Scouts of America, he was a leader of Cub Scout Pack 73 and Boy Scout Troop 73 at Miami Elementary School. He was also active in Troop 26 at St Mary’s. He served as a member of the Mayor’s Human Relations Commission and acted as an interpreter while serving on the Task Force for Spanish Speaking people and the Crisis Center in Lafayette. Pedro considered volunteerism his way to repay a debt “to the people of Lafayette who opened doors to [him].” Pedro is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia and his children, Peter (Julie), Pam (Phil) Hancock, and Patrice; Granddaughters Marissa (Brad), Meredith (Matt), Callie, and Cassie; Great-grandsons Landon and Owen; Siblings Alfredo (Lucy), Enrique, Lucho (Irma), Rosa Ana (Tony) Huaman, and Ada Graciela; Sister-in-law Marge Grossmann, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by Ana Marie Castillo Paredes, Rodolfo and Ada Castillo. In keeping with Pedro’s passion for helping others, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tippecanoe County Chapter of The American Red Cross or a charity of choice.
