Marvin Gick

Marvin Joseph Gick, age 92, of Lafayette, passed away peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by family at 7:35 PM Sunday, May 29, 2022, at Creasy Springs Health Campus. Marvin was born on February 19, 1930 in Fowler, Indiana. He was the son of the late Nora (Plante) and Bernard H Gick. He was raised in Benton County where he attended 6 years at Sacred Heart School and 6 years at Wadena High School where in graduated in 1948. Marvin started farming in 1948 and served in the United States Army from 1954 – 1956. He was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Unit and member of the American Legion. On April 30, 1960, he married Marjorie J. Spitznagle of Lafayette at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Together they traveled all 50 states and raised four children. They were married for 57 years before she passed away on June 10, 2017. The first 35 years of marriage were enjoyed on the family farm in Fowler. They moved to West Lafayette after retiring in 1995. He enjoyed time with family, growing tomatoes, playing cards, making bird houses, and helping family and friends. He also spent countless hours putting all types of puzzles together and loved sharing them. Marvin was a Benton County Councilman for eight years and served on the Benton County Planning Commission for 15 years and was a strong advocate of no-till farming. A devout Catholic, his faith was strong. He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fowler. He joined St. Lawrence Catholic Church after moving to West Lafayette. Marvin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and mentor to many. Surviving are 4 children: Janet Conrad of Lafayette, Ronald (Stephanie) Gick of Fowler, Donna (Manny Garcia) Gick of West Lafayette, and Dale (Erin) Gick of Whiteland. Also surviving are Grandchildren: Lance (fiancée Tracy) Spikes, Allyson (Lyle) Thomas, Alex Gick, Brandon Gick, Kalli Spikes, Faith Spikes, Anna Gick, Reese Gick, Justin Gick, and Daniel Conrad. Also surviving is sister Patricia (late husband Thomas) Sego, brother Larry Gick and favorite Granddog Kya . He was preceded in death by his brother Bernard (late wife Agnes) Gick. A Rosary Service will be held at 4:30 PM prior to the visitation from 5 - 7 PM Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home (1104 Columbia St, Lafayette, IN 47901). A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, June 2, 2022, at St. Lawrence Church (1916 Meharry Street Lafayette, IN 47904), with Father Daniel Gartland and Fr. Andrew Dudzinski officiating. Interment to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery (465 West Division Road, Fowler, IN 47944) at 2:00 PM Thursday with American Legion military rites.
