Harold Brannan

November 4, 1941 — August 26, 2022

Monticello, IN

Harold D. “Dennis” Brannan, 80, of Monticello, IN passed away peacefully in his daughter’s home in Lafayette on Friday, August 26, 2022 surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on November 4, 1941, in Virginia, Illinois to the late Harold J. Brannan and Mary Aileen (Young) Brannan. After graduating from Virginia High School in 1959, Dennis served from 1960-1964 in the U.S. Navy. He married Carolyn A. Scott on February 27, 1965, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in their hometown of Virginia. He retired in 2009 from Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company, after serving 42 years as a boiler inspector and moving with the family to Michigan, Indiana, Texas, and finally back to Indiana. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the National Rifle Association. He loved reading, feeding the birds and deer, watching movies and attending his grandchildren’s activities, always supporting them–whether near or far. Dennis could often be found enjoying a senior coffee from McDonald’s or offering a piece of candy from a bag of Werther’s Originals. Dennis loved his family and lived up to the saying, “Grandfathers are for loving and fixing things.” He will be dearly missed. Along with his wife, Carolyn, Dennis is survived by and was the proud father of 3 children: Theresa (Brian) Sorgenfrei, of Lafayette, Robin (Pat) Crofton, of Mico, TX, and Greg (Robin) Brannan, of Greencastle. He was the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren: Catherine, Nathan, Sarah, Jon, Caitlin, Patrick, Brittany C, Brittany L, Justin, Isaiah, Zoe. He is also survived by a brother, Jim (Janis) Brannan of The Woodlands, TX, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Jean Martin, and his beloved pets, Kitty, Nicky, and Dolce. The family is grateful for the excellent care provided by the Franciscan Health Lafayette East staff (especially from the ER and 3North), and others who cared for Dennis (especially Dr. Cecilia May and Hospice Nurse Dana). Memorial contributions may be given to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or a charity of the donor’s choice.
