William L. Bird, 83, Fowler resident and retired Benton County educator, passed away Wednesday afternoon on October 24, 2012.
Bill was born in Wabash, IN. on September 1, 1929 to Francis and Alice Bird. He graduated from Wabash High School and went on to have a distinguished education, graduating from Manchaster College with a BS degree. He went on to get his Masters of Education from Indiana Univesity as well as Masters in Science from Marquette. He also took classes at Case Institute of Technology, Purdue University, and the University of Denver.
Bill is well remembered for his many years of dedication to education in Benton County. After serving in the U.S. Army in Japan during the Korean War, Bill began working as a science teacher at Fowler High School. He taught physics, chemistry, math and life sciences. He also served as Benton County Probation officer. Bill spent 12 years in the classroom, and continued on to become the Federal Projects Coordinator, supervising principal and Curriculum and Personnel Director for Benton Community Schools. Mr. Bird is remembered by his students for his excellent instruction and has gained the respect of both his students and his peers.
Outside of the classroom, Bill was an inactive member of the Fowler Rotary Club, a member of the Fowler United Methodist Church, member of the Fowler American Legion and the Wabash, IN. Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed getting afternoon coffee at the gas station with his friends and spending time with his family.
Bill married Marilynn Hoch on December 24, 1955. Together, the couple created the biggest pride of Bill's life: their family.
Bill is survivied by his wife and three children: Carol (Allen) Grady of Lafayette; Tim (Geralyn) of Fowler; and James (Debbie) of Noblesville. Bill is also survived by his four grandchildren, Cassie (David) Hiday; Kara Bird; Kyle Bird; and Meghan Grady as well as his two great-grandsons, Matthew and Mark Hiday.
Friends may call at the Fowler United Methodist Church from 10 AM until the service at 2 PM Saturday, Rev. Brenda Ludwig and Rev. Linda Sproull officiating. Interment to follow at Fowler Cemetery with American Legion graveside rites. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fowler United Methodist Church or Benton Community Foundation.
