Samuel D. "Sam" Wankel, 60, of Pine Village, IN. died suddenly and unexpectedly Wednesday July 23, 2008 in Chattanooga, TN. in the emergency room of Erlanger Medical Center of an apparent heart attack. Born May 9, 1948 in Jacksonville, IL., the son of the late Albert V. and Mary Jean Stout Wankel, he had resided in Pine Village the past 20 years. He was a graduate of Bowling Green, MO.. High school, and was a veteran of the Army, serving during the Viet Nam war. Mr. Wankel married Ruthann Eberly at Pine Village December 16, 1989, and she survives. He was a member of the Pine Village United Methodist Church, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Attica, and enjoyed camping and gardening. Mr. Wankel was a self-employed over the road truck driver, and was stricken while driving his truck, managing to steer it to safety before his death. Surviving beside his wife is a daughter, Rachel Hayes (husband Chris Sandstedt) of Waynesboro, GA.; a step daughter, Angel Cunningham (husband Dave) of Pine Village, IN.; 4 sons, Bob Wankel of Crossville, TN.; David Young (wife Tiffany); Eric Young (wife Neka) and Alan Young (companion Jessica) all of Louden, TN.; and 4 brothers, Doug Wankel (wife Marilyn) of Washington, D.C.; Chuck Wankel (wife Sue) of Bowling Green, MO.; Rick Wankel of the state of Washington; and Steve Wankel of Jacksonville, IL. Friends may call at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME, Oxford from 3 until 6 P.M. Sunday. Funeral services at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME, Oxford 11:00 A.M. Monday, Rev. Mike Link officiating. Interment Gray Cemetery near Pine Village, with VFW military rites. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Jasmine, Tanner, Matthew, Toby and Skyler. Preceded in death by one brother.
