Mary Steenhoven

Mary Virginia Steenhoven, 78, of Elmore, Ohio, formerly of West Lafayette, died in the Comfort Care Unit of Lake Park Nursing Facility in Sylvania, Ohio 5:51 PM Thursday March 3, 2011. Mrs. Steenhoven had been residing with her daughter in Elmore, Ohio since November 14, 2009. She was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, July 24, 1932, the daughter of the late Chet and Marie Bailey, and was a graduate of George Washington High School in Alexandria, VA., but spent much of her youth in Mankato, MN. Her marriage was to John R. Steenhoven, Jr. at Iowa City, Iowa August 13, 1959, and he preceded her in death May 7, 2008. Mrs. Steenhoven was a partner with her husband in Steenhoven and Associates and was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lafayette. Surviving is a daughter, Deborah L. Pocino (husband Carlo) of Elmore, Ohio and 2 sons, John R. Steenhoven, III (wife Gwen) of Portage, MI. and Timothy A. Steenhoven of Virginia Beach, VA. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother Howard, and a sister Mildred. Virginia was a true angel. She devoted her life to serving her family, community and anyone in need, not only through outreach and volunteer work, but through her example. Virginia loved life immensely and wanted others to experience the same. She loved sewing for others, gardening, baking, reading, traveling and bird watching. An avid music lover, she played the piano and violin, and with her her husband attended may concerts at Purdue. Friends may call from the Rosary Service at 4:45 until 8 PM Wednesday at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNEAL HOME, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 AM Thursday, St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Fr. Dan Gartland officiating, with interment to follow at St. Boniface Cemetery.
