Mary A. Sherwin, 90, of West Lafayette, died at IU Arnett Hospital Monday May 27, 2013 at 3:22 AM. Mary was born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico September 8, 1922, the daughter of the late Hazelton and Mabel Morin Avery. She was a graduate of Clarks Hill, IN. High School and also a graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, MO. She served in the US Navy from 1943 until 1946 as an air traffic controller, and later worked for the US Postal service for 20 years. Mary married Curtis Lee Sherwin in Hawaii May 8, 1946, and he preceded her in death May 2, 1968.
She was a member of the Linden Baptist Church; the DAR; founder of Tip Tax; and served on the Tippecanoe County School Board for two terms.
Surviving is a daughter, Mary Louise "Bonnie" Uhler (husband Joseph) of Polk, PA.; four sons, Curtis Lee Sherwin, Jr. (wife Candice) of Romney, IN.; Robert Avery Sherwin (wife Kristen L. Willard) of Hermosa Beach, CA.; Major W. Sherwin (wife Vicki) of West Lafayette, IN.; Lucius Marshall Sherwin (wife Kimberly) of Plano, TX.; and a brother William Avery (wife Bonnie) of Plainfield, IN. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, William Avery Sherwin and two brothers, Hazelton and Charles Avery.
Friends may call at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, Linden, one hour prior to the service at 11:00 AM Friday, Chaplain David Hess officiating. The interment will be held in Linden cemetery with Crawfordsville American Legion military rites. If friends desire, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
