Mary German

October 25, 1920 — December 5, 2011

Mary Elnor German, widow of Willis "Bill" German and mother of F. William "Bill" German, passed away December 5, 2011 after a short illness.

Mary was born October 25, 1920 to Maude (Tyndall) and Claude Shumate in Lafayette, IN. She graduated in 1939 from Clarks Hill High School, where she excelled in scholastics and played basketball. Mary and Bill were married on March 25, 1942, right before Bill went off to fight in WWII. During the war, Mary worked at the Aluminum factory in Lafayette, as an original "Rosie the Riveter" to help support the family. Aside from her family and friends, there was nothing Mary loved more than farming beside her husband and son, during their lifetime as residents of Linden, Indiana. She was an avid seamstress, a wonderful cook, a great book-keeper for the farm and very much loved her community of Linden.

Mary will be deeply missed by her brother, Herman (Barb) Shumate of Lafayette, daughter-in-law Zua (Bill) German, her grandson Jan (Heather) German of Cobb, CA, her granddaughters Jill German (Beth Meyerson) and Jacque Jones (Tony Wideman) of Indianapolis, Brenda Davis of Columbus, OH (former daughter-in-law), along with Mary's great-grandchildren Blake, Haley, Taylor, Bret and Jake.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bill; her son, Bill; her sisters Mildred, Margaret, Fern, and Gladys and her brother, Bill.

Friends may call at Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home in Linden, Indiana from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 10 until the service at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Dr. LaMont Bonath will be officiating, with interment to follow at Linden Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Linden United Methodist Church
