Mamie B. "Penny" Whitus, 85, of Battle Ground, IN. died at her residence Sunday morning May 9, 2010. Born May 1, 1925 in Lamar County, Alabama, the daughter of the late William and Lillian Carr Pennington, she had resided in the Lafayette-Battle Ground area for the past 50 years. She married Vestel B. Whitus in West Lafayette, IN. August 18, 1973, and he preceded her in death March 27, 2009. Mrs. Whitus had worked as a waitress and bartender for various establishments in Lafayette including the Tick-Tock, Squirrel Cage and Shawnee Tavern. Surviving are 2 daughters, Shirley Myers of Lebanon, KY.; Virginia Lee of Camden, IN. and a son, Thomas W. Pennington (wife Elaine) of Cherry Hill, North Carolina. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by 3 sisters and 6 brothers. Friends may call at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME, 1104 ColumbiaSt. from noon until the service at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, Rev. John Wagner officiating. Interment Battle Ground Cemetery.
