Katherine M. "Katie" Markee

Katherine M. Markee, 83, died July 31, 2014.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Alexis and Margaret (Madigan) Markee and her devoted longtime companion James W. Barany, she is survived by sister Joan Kramer - Akron, OH, brothers Arthur (Teri) - Cleveland, OH and Robert - Philadelphia, PA ; 15 nieces and nephews.
Katie was born and raised in Cleveland. She graduated and received a BA from Trinity College in Washington DC, a MA from Columbia University and a MSLS from Case Western University School of Library Science. In 1968 she began a long and distinguished career with Purdue University Libraries, starting her career as a reference librarian. In 1971 she served as the Personnel Librarian, then in 1975 she was appointed to serve as the Databases Librarian for the Computer Based Information Services (CBIS), a position she held for 22 years. In 1996 Katie was asked to serve as the Head of the Archives and Special Collections Unit, a position she held until 2006 when she was appointed to her last position as Oral History Librarian. During her 43 year career, she published many articles and gave presentations at conferences and annual meetings as well as winning several awards and honors, including; Sigma Xi Research Support Award and the John H. Moriarty Award for Excellence in Library Service.
Although she retired not too long ago, in her heart and mind she never truly retired. Her love for family, friends, her profession and Purdue never wavered.
Visitation will be at Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home 1104 Columbia Street, Lafayette on Thursday, August 7, 2014 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm with Rosary Service at 4:45 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Cathedral Friday, August 8 at 10:30 am, Fr. Gerald J. Borawski, VF officiating. The interment will be at St. Boniface Cemetery directly after the mass.
