John G. ‘Robi’ Robinson, 53, of Lafayette, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2025, while on duty at Lafayette Fire Department Station 9.
Born on July 21, 1971, in Lafayette, Robi was the youngest of five children of the late Robert G. and Betty E. (Shearer) Robinson. He grew up on the family farm in White County and graduated from Frontier High School. He went on to study Aviation Technology at Vincennes University, where his interest in mechanics and precision took flight.
In 1994, Robi joined the Lafayette Fire Department, answering a lifelong calling to serve. Over the course of almost 30 years, he rose through the ranks, ultimately achieving the position of Sergeant. Robi was known among his fellow firefighters not just for his steady leadership and skill, but for his friendship, mentorship of younger recruits and his unwavering reliability in high-stress moments. During his career he served on the Dive Team and the Technical Rescue Team. He always loved showing off the fire truck to the kids, even the big ones.
On October 2, 1999, Robi married Melissa McDill, the love of his life and his steadfast partner through every chapter. Together, they built a home grounded in laughter, dedication, and deep love—especially for their two daughters, Ava and Reese.
Robi’s world centered around his family. Ava, his oldest, is currently studying Exercise Science at Indiana University. A loyal Purdue fan, Robi took great pleasure in the friendly rivalry, but his pride in her independence and work ethic was unmistakable. Reese, a student at McCutcheon High School, shines on the school’s Dance Team. Robi was her biggest fan, rarely missing a performance. He was fully present for both of his girls, always supporting, and always proud.
Outside of his career and family, Robi was a lifelong Cubs and Bears fan. He found peace in his garden and took great pride in the landscaping around their home—a reflection of his quiet attention to detail and love of making things grow.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Melissa; daughters Ava and Reese; his brother Quentin Robinson, his sisters, Shari Zimpelman, Mary Dawson, Jacki Stockment, and 14 nieces and nephews.
A public service honoring Robi’s life and service will take place on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 11:30 AM with David Tate, Lafayette Fire Department Chaplain officiating. Visitation for the public will be held from 9 to 11:00 AM. All will be held in the Lafayette Jefferson High School Gymnasium. The Lafayette Fire Department will honor his memory with a Last Alarm Bell ceremony and Honor Guard tribute.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Robi’s memory to the Ava and Reese Robinson Education Fund (to be established). Friends and colleagues are also encouraged to share memories that reflect the love, dedication, and quiet strength with which he lived.
