John Mclaughlin

Professor Emeritus John F. McLaughlin, 83, of West Lafayette, died at University Place 10:00 PM Tuesday March 29, 2011. Mr. McLaughlin was born in New York City, New York September 21, 1927 the son of the late William and Anne Goodwin McLaughlin. He was a 1944 graduate of Stuyvesant High School in New York City, and served in the US Army Air Force from 1945 until 1947. Mr. McLaughlin received his BCE from Syracuse University in 1950; his MSCE in 1953 from Purdue University and his PhD in 1957 from Purdue University. He joined Purdue in 1950, and was named an assistant professor of civil engineering in 1957-1959; associate professor of civil engineering in 1959 - 1963; professor of civil engineering in 1963; assistant head, schools of engineering 1965 - 1968; head, school of engineering 1968 - 1978; assistant dean, schools of engineering 1977 - 1980; associate dean, schools of engineering 1980 - 1994; acting dean, schools of engineering 1984, interim dean, schools of engineering 1994 - 1995; and was named professor emeritus in 1995. Mr. McLaughlin served as chair, road school, 1958 - 1969; and director, joint highway research project 1968-1978. He received the Award of Merit, American Society for Testing and Materials, 1984, and was named an honorary member, American Concrete Institute in 1984. In 1995, he received the Purdue Presidential Medal from Purdue President Steven C. Beering. He was a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers; Honorary member, American Concrete Institute; Director, 1966 -1969, 1975 - 1977; Vice President , 1977 - 1979; President 1979 - 1980; Fellow, American Society for Testing and Materials Director 1984 - 1986, and was a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Kansas. He married Eleanor T. Trethewey in Lafayette, IN. November 22, 1950, and she preceded him in death July 14, 2010. Mr. McLaughlin was a member of Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette. Surviving are 2 daughters, Susan A. McLaughlin (husband Alan Rebar of West Lafayette, IN.; Cynthia L. Armstrong (husband John W.) of Westfield, IN.; 2 sons, Donald F. McLaughlin (wife Lara) of Cupertino, CA. and Kevin J. McLaughlin (wife Paula M.) of Austin, Texas. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, David & Catherine Armstrong; Abigail & William McLaughlin and a great-grandson, Caden Armstrong. A memorial mass will be held at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament Saturday June 4 at 9:30 AM, Fr. David Buckles officiating. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday June 4, at 11:00 AM in Hardebeck Hall, Church of the Blessed Sacrament, with a reception immediately following until 3:00 PM.
