Jean Smelser

Jean Ann Smelser, 77, of Lafayette, died at her residence Monday morning September 15, 2014. Jean was born in Lafayette, IN January 23, 1937, the daughter of the late Vernon Paul and Esther Marie Egnew Smith and graduated from Wainwright High School in 1968. Jean married Stanley R. Smelser in Lafayette April 28, 1961, and he survives. She was a member of Evergreen Wesleyan Church, served as Director of Missions, and was a Sunday school teacher and enjoyed serving at church camp. Jean loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was employed as a bus driver for Tippecanoe School Corporation 23 years, retiring in 1998. Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Cindy Bowman (husband Michael) of Romney, IN; Gail Rupp (husband Stan) of Lafayette, IN; two sons, Gary W. Smelser of West Lafayette, IN and Jerry R. Smelser (wife Norma) of Lafayette, IN; one brother, Vernon Smith (wife Linda) of West Bend, WI; and one sister, Carolyn Treadway (husband Clyde) of Ft. Wayne, IN. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, David L. Parker. Friends may call at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St. from 5 until 7 PM Thursday. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home 10:30 AM Friday, Rev. Joseph Park officiating, with interment in Grand View Cemetery, West Lafayette. If friends desire, memorials may be made to the Evergreen Wesleyan Church Missions Program.
