James Donald “Don” Yochem, 93, of Lafayette, passed away at St. Anthony’s Healthcare in Lafayette 5:10 PM Monday August 28, 2023. Don was born in Fowler, IN January 19, 1930, the son of the late Otto and Irene (Anstett) Yochem. He was a 1948 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School, and received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1955 in Social Studies Education and a Master’s Degree in Education in 1965, both from St. Louis University. He taught for a total of 34 years and retired in 1990, having last taught at Klondike Middle School. He married Berniece A. Schellenberger at Earl Park, IN December 27, 1958 and she survives. Don was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, which became the U. S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War from 1948 until 1952 and was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral. Surviving with his wife are three daughters, Barbara Edmondson (Gary) of Lafayette, IN, Linda Fields (Steve) of Lafayette, IN and Christine Derry of Glen Ellyn, IL. Also surviving are seven Grandchildren, Brandt Hasser, Ryan Hasser, Amanda Pemble, Ross Edmondson, Ellie Fields, John Derry and Luke Derry, along with eight great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Marvin Yochem, three sisters, his twin Sister, Joan Cassman, Marjorie Sondgeroth and Evelyn Gabriel. Friends may call at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 612 Wabash Ave., Lafayette, 47905 from 10:00 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM Thursday Aug. 31, Fr. Dennis O’Keeffe officiating.
