George Martin

George J. "Jerry" Martin, 75, of Lafayette, died at St. Anthony's Healthcare 5:00 A.M. Saturday October 10, 2009 where he had been a patient the past 2 weeks. Mr. Martin was born January 3, 1934 in Hammond, IN. the son of the late George J. and Mary Rose Martin and had resided in Lafayette the past 37 years. He was a graduate of Bishop Noll High School in Hammond, IN. and attended St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, IN. He married Elizabeth Jane Conlin at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer November 5, 1955, and she survives. Mr. Martin had worked as an agent for Federated Mutual Insurance Company from 1961 until 1971. He then was employed with National Homes Acceptance Corporation as corporate insurance manager. Mr. Martin retired in 1995 from the Lafayette Catholic School system after serving many years as the controller and business manager. After his retirement, he worked for a brief period for Andy Frain Services as an usher at Purdue University sporting events. He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral; Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree; St. Mary's RCIA Inquiry for 22 years; Tippecanoe County Right to Life; Fraternal Order of Police, Arman Lodge #49; and was very active in the Lafayette Catholic School System, especially Central Catholic. Surviving with his wife is a daughter, Patricia F.( husband David H., Jr.) Payne of Lafayette, IN.; 6 sons, Gregory J. Martin (companion Sandy Eismin) of West Lafayette, IN.; Dennis G. Martin (wife Ann) of Lafayette.; David R. Martin (wife Amy) of Lafayette; Vincent J. Martin (wife Lori) of West Lafayette, IN.; Peter G. Martin (wife Leah S.) of Lafayette; Tobias G. Martin (wife Leah J.) of Portland, Oregon.; and a brother James B. Martin (wife Lois) of Santa Claus, IN. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a sister, Raellen Martin. Jerry's greatest joy was spending time with his family. His faith was unwavering and an inspiration to all. Friends may call at St. Mary's Cathedral from the Rosary service at 4:45 PM until 8 PM Tuesday. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Cathedral 10:30 AM Wednesday, Fr. Dan Gartland and Fr. William O'Donnell, CPPS officiating. Private family interment at a later date at St. Mary's Cemetery.
