Francis “Frank” Edward Korchnak, 83, of Romney, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, at Franciscan Health Lafayette. He was born in Johnstown, PA on Oct. 20, 1941, the son of the late Frank John and Anna Cecilia (Pardus) Korchnak. He was a 1959 graduate of Johnstown Catholic High School in Pennsylvania.
After high school, Frank enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served with the 9th Air Weather Squadron and met the love of his life, Pat. He served from 1959-63 during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam War era. Frank married Pat (Morowczynski) at St. Turibius Church in Chicago, IL on Feb. 16, 1963. After he was discharged in 1964, he moved to Lafayette. He started out working for Louis Rausch Construction and then spent 34 years at the National Cash Register. After NCR, Frank enjoyed his time with BSA working in the scout store as well as working part-time at Meijer & USPS.
Frank was known for his humorous spirit and his passion for sharing joy through his famous “magic” tricks. His kindness and caring nature made him a beloved husband, friend, grandfather and community member.
Frank was not only dedicated to his family but also to his faith and community. For 55 years, he was a devoted member of St. Mary's Cathedral, where he actively served on the Parish Renewal Team and as a Eucharist minister. Furthermore, his commitment to improving couples' relationships was evident as a member of the Marriage Encounter Team & he served on the Diocesan Scouting committee. Frank's dedication to serving others extended beyond his church; he was also a proud member of the American Legion Post 11 honor squad, demonstrating his unwavering respect for those who served.
An avid sports fan, Frank took great pride in supporting his favorite Pittsburgh teams—the Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates. He cherished spending time outdoors, particularly going fishing, where the catch of the day was secondary to the peace he found in nature. His greatest joy came from cheering on his grandchildren at swim meets, where his enthusiasm and pride were palpable. Family was everything to Frank; he found immense fulfillment in being with his loved ones, creating lasting memories that will forever be cherished.
Among his proudest accomplishments, Frank held dear his service in the Air Force, reflecting a profound sense of duty and honor that characterized his life. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his legacy of love, laughter, and dedication will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
Frank is survived by his wife of 62 years Pat Korchnak; daughters Christine Paumer (Joel) & Marianne Kromkowski (Christopher); Son Eric Korchnak (Kristy); grandchildren Casey Kormkowski, Alex Kromkowski, Emma Smith, Nathan Check, Anthony Korchnak, Kenzie Korchnak; sister-in-law Sr. Rosemarie SSJTOSF; brother-in-law Paul Morowczynski.
