Lafayette, IN

Elma M. Nichols, beloved matriarch, passed away on January 6, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at St. Anthony Healthcare. She was born on November 3, 1919, in Lafayette, IN.

After graduating from Lafayette Jefferson High School, Elma began her career at the BMV where she excelled for several years before transitioning to work for a Ford dealer. In her later years of employment, she settled into clerical work for White Trucks until her well-deserved retirement in 1985.

Outside of work, Elma had a vibrant personality that radiated love and care towards her family. She adored working and devoted herself to the well-being of her loved ones. As a matriarch figure, she played an important role in nurturing and guiding multiple generations. A loving wife and nurturing mother, Elma's devotion knew no bounds. She enjoyed activities such as bowling and playing Bridge. Additionally, she was an active member of St. Mary's Cathedral where she formerly attended services. Up until her passing she received communion.

Elma is survived by her son Robert (Anne) Nichols of West Lafayette, IN. She will be dearly missed by her five grandchildren: Matthew (Monica) Nichols, Jeremy Nichols, Jennifer (Steacy) Housholder, Sarah (Chris) Bradford, and Elizabeth Hawkins. Her legacy is further carried on by her fifteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, 7 nieces and 1 nephew.

Elma has been preceded in death by cherished individuals who held significant places in her heart: her beloved husband Robert M. Nichols, great-great-grandson Beckham Bradford, sister Roberta Stewart, brother-in-law George Stewart, and sister-in-law Helen Hulswitt.

A private mass and interment will held. Those desiring may contribute in memoriam to the American Cancer Society. Special thank-you to Franciscan Hospice & St. Anthony Healthcare for their exceptional care. Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home of Lafayette is honored to serve the Nichols family.
