Helen Vaughan DeHahn, 97, died on Monday, December 26, 2011 at 3:30pm. Helen was born in Lafayette, Indiana on January 17, 1914, the daughter of George V. Vaughan and Esther Kurtz Vaughan. She married John Charles DeHahn at St. Charles Catholic Church in Otterbein on June 1, 1936 and he preceded her in death on August 10, 1967.
Helen graduated from St. Francis Academy as the salutatorian of her class. She was a master tailor. Helen was co-owner of DeHahn Produce Company with her husband and subsequent to his death with her son. She enrolled at Purdue University at age 69 in 1983 as a freshman and graduated as a distinguished student in 1987 with a degree in English. Helen was so proud to graduate in the same class as her oldest granddaughter. Helen traveled extensively both nationally and internationally. She was a lifelong learner and enjoyed exploring other countries. Helen belonged to the St. Lawrence Altar and Aid Society, St. Lawrence Senior Citizens Club, St. Elizabeth Auxiliary, and several bridge clubs.
Surviving are three children: John A. DeHahn, Lafayette, Indiana; Patricia D. Steele, LaPorte, Indiana; and Mary L. DeHahn, St. Louis, Missouri. Also surviving are three granddaughters: Melissa Kohne and Lori VanArsdel of Lafayette, and Tammy DeHahn of Newbury Park, California. She is also survived by three great grandchildren: Emily Walker, Jacob Van Arsdel and Taylor Van Arsdel of Lafayette. In addition she is survived by many dear nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph V. DeHahn. Also preceding her in death are 7 brothers and sisters: Margaret Depp, Robert Vaughan, Mary V. Shriner, Catherine V. Gordon, Camilla V. Brant, David Vaughan, and Patricia V. Shreve.
Visitation with the family will be on Monday, January 2, 2012, at Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St. Lafayette from 4:00 to 7:30pm. Catholic Mass will be at St. Lawrence Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 11:00. The service will be followed by a luncheon in the church social hall. Private graveside services will be held at St. Boniface Cemetery at a later date.
